Posted 6/10/2008 9:59:41 AM | | | Hi everybody,
i would like to recommend this book to everybody, Ship It!,from Jared Richarson and William Gwaltney Jr. The pbulisher is The Pragmatic Programmers. http://www.amazon.com/Practical-Guide-Successful-Software-Projects/dp/0974514047/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1213116537&sr=8-1 it is 20$ so a good price for a good book,
the book talks about all those buzz words u have heard but explains those. Scripting the builds, daily builds, unit testing, tracking bugs, and requests are the important concepts the book mentioned. You will also find sections such as "Am i doing right","What are the signs showing i am on the wrong track"
If you know that most of the software projects die before they are launched, you will appreciate this book even more.
One of the good chapters i like is Common Problems section. I have met almost all problems that are mentioned in this chapter such as, why tests, my team doesnt want to contribute to develop better, my manager is angry, hey who is mentoring junior developers etc
I usually dont read the appendixes :< but this book's appendixes are valuable, cause now it is talking about the softwares that will do all the stuff mentioned in the book, such as source control system, unit testing, integration system, building scripts etc.
If you want to a a good programmer buy this book , it is 20$, not even worth a full tank of gas.
