Posted 1/31/2008 9:30:45 PM | | | Hello all,
As you may notice from your website, I'm going to be presenting on February 19th about TDD. My typical presentation is geared more towards Code Camps, which are typically about 60 minutes long. Now, most user group meetings are two hours, so we've got lots of time. Is there anything in particular, related to Test Driven Development, that you would like to see in the extra time available to us? Maybe reply in this thread so we can keep it all together.

| Posted 2/13/2008 12:48:00 PM | | | Hi Tom, Wow, thanks for asking! I've never had a presenter ask what the group would want weeks prior to the presentation. I haven't used TDD in a while but here is a small list of things that I've "wanted to try" but just haven't gotten around to yet: - Heard about a testing tool with a web UI that provided testing results, but also tested on business rules rather than code. Was supposed to allow stakeholders to write tests. I thought it was called something like FitNess but I'm not getting any hits on Google. Allowing my consumers to write test that they could see pass as my development progressed seems like a really great feedback tool.
- TDD for databases. I recently heard a podcast on .Net Rocks with Andy Lenard, but it mainly focused on using Team Foundation Server. What about testing database development for the rest of us who can't afford this $30k product?
 - TDD for UI. Years ago this hadn't amounted to anything. Where is it today?
- Please clarify all these code generation products that write my tests for me. I thought the whole idea was write the test first, let it fail, then write the code to make it pass. If my code isn’t' written yet how in the world can a code generator know what I want to test?
Since at my work we don't have the budget for high end test tools (or the general culture for TDD at all) I'd like to focus on a lot of the community driven tools such as NUnit and integration with Ant or SVN (or whatever is currently being used anyway). That's just my request. Others may want the tools of choice for those companies with large pocket books.

| Posted 2/17/2008 10:01:05 PM | | | Thanks for the feedback all. I'm in Palm Springs now, and I gotta say that I like the weather a lot better (just last weekend it got to -44C at night). Anyway....
A lot of your questions are VERY common, and actually present a lot of ground to cover even for just two hours. How does this sound: For about the first hour, I'll give my "canned" presentation which is geared more towards a Code Camp format (i.e. ~60 minutes of presentation, 15 minutes of questions). This is a mix of some of the theory and a bit of the practical.
From there, we can take things in sort of an "ad hoc" method, targetting common areas of interest?

| Posted 2/27/2008 2:22:49 PM | | | | Hello All! I'm a newbie to this group and I noticed you are having a rollout meeting on March 11th. I live in Lake Elsinore and commute to downtown L.A. on the train. I was planning on parking at the Riverside station on the 11th and taking an early train home so that I can attend the meeting. It is my understanding that it costs $5.00 to attend. Is that correct? I was going to attend the "Heroes Happen Here" rollout event here today in Los Angeles (2/27), but my employer wouldn't let us all attend. Since I am senior developer/team lead, I offered up my seat to somebody else and then I discovered your user group meeting. I already own VS2005 Pro and VS2008 Pro. I have been writing code since 1981 on an Apple ][ Plus with a CP/M-80 (Z80) card and 64k of memory using Basic and dBase II. I am currently writing code in Anders Hjelsberg's previous successful toy, Delphi, and we have an Oracle 10g database. At any rate, any information would be helpful! Thanks, Steve Hodgkiss

| Posted 2/27/2008 4:35:31 PM | | | | Thanks for the confirmation. I hope they got my RSVP. I typed in my e-mail address. I used to write articles for Pinnacle Publishing "Reference Clipper" and "Reference Visual Objects" about 12 years ago. I was a presenter on the Windows Help System and Visual Objects for Computer Associates back in 1996. So, once I get my chops up with VS, I could see me doing something at some point. Nice to make your acquaintance. Steve
